3 Reasons There’s a Strange Smell Coming From Your Air Conditioner

Have you noticed a strange smell when the air conditioner turns on in your Lake Placid, Florida, home? If so, it can be very concerning, especially if you don’t know the reason for the odor. Here are some common causes for air conditioner smells that you shouldn’t ignore:

Standing Water

A musty odor that ‘ reminiscent of dirty socks is one of the most common air conditioner smells, and several different issues cause it. Typically, standing water is the main reason your system smells like dirty socks.

There could be water in your system because a crack in your ductwork is allowing moisture in, and it’s also possible that you have a clogged condensate drain pan. In some cases, your system may have a musty odor because your evaporator coil is dirty and requires cleaning.

Burning Odors

Burning odors coming from your air conditioner should alarm you because they almost always mean something is seriously wrong. For instance, a burning smell may mean there’s a wiring issue in your air conditioner, which is a fire risk.

A burning smell can also mean that your blower motor is burning out or that there’s another mechanical issue. If the burning odor is ongoing, shut down your system and seek professional help right away. As a result, you’ll avoid further damage and even personal injury.

Pest Infestation

If there’s a rotting smell coming from the vents in your home, it could be because of a pest infestation. If you suspect that this is the issue, shut down your system and open your windows. Call an air conditioning professional to inspect and clean your ductwork.
